Academic Mentor Development Fellowship

The Academic Mentor Development Fellowship is a faculty academic development scheme under AM-ETHOS. The Fellowship aims to build strategic capabilities and a strong leadership pipeline for the SingHealth Duke-NUS AMC through structured mentoring and academic exposure.

The Academic Mentor Development Fellow who is awarded the Fellowship will help inculcate a strong academic mentorship culture and grow a resourceful mentoring support framework within the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre (AMC). The Fellowship provides the opportunity for the Academic Mentor Development Fellow to gain leadership exposure and mentorship opportunity from senior faculty Academic Mentor at Duke Health or other established AMCs.

The Academic Mentor Development Fellow will develop an Academic Mentor Development Plan with the Academic Mentor to establish collaborative problem solving/improvement goals to work on over a one year fellowship period.

Eligibility

All Faculty holding leadership positions or are assuming greater leadership responsibilities in the Academic Clinical Programme (ACP) or Joint Institute and SingHealth Duke-NUS AMC are eligible for the scheme. These include ACP Academic Chairs, ACP Academic Vice Chairs, ACP Directors and other outstanding Faculty Leaders from the ACPs or Joint Institutes

Eligible Faculty Leaders must be nominated or supported by the ACP Academic Chair, Head of Joint Institutes or Senior Academic Medicine Leaders within SingHealth Duke-NUS AMC.

Outcomes & Objectives

The objectives of the AM-ETHOS Academic Mentor Development Fellowship are to:

 

  1. Cultivate strong Faculty Leaders who can advance our AMC and improve medical education at Duke-NUS;
  2. Develop effective role models and passionate mentors for medical students at Duke-NUS;
  3. Leverage the best practices and academic culture sharing of Duke Health, Durham, USA by pairing candidates with Duke Academic Leaders and Chairs; and
  4. Recognise outstanding and excellent Faculty Leaders who will mentor and play the role of career navigators for Duke-NUS medical students and junior faculty within his/her respective SingHealth Duke-NUS ACP or Joint Institute.

 

Upon completion of the AM-ETHOS Academic Mentor Development Fellowship, the Academic Mentor Development Fellow is expected to submit a Fellowship Completion Report that evaluates the collaborative problem solving/improvement goals; and provides recommendations to implement result areas of improvement in the ACP or Joint Institute and Duke-NUS. The Academic Mentor Development Fellow must also provide recommendations for enhancing academic mentoring culture within SingHealth Duke-NUS AMC.

Funding Support

To facilitate and cultivate the mentoring journey, the Fellowship provides support for the Academic Mentor Development Fellow and the Academic Mentor to visit each other, so as to work together on their collaborative problem-solving/improvement goals.

Application & Review Process

Applications will consist of the following:

  1. Completed Application Form for AM-ETHOS Academic Mentor Development Fellowship
  2. Completed Academic Mentor Development Plan with clear outcomes and goals
  3. Updated CV enclosure
  4. Written recommendation from ACP Academic Chair / Head of Joint Institute / Senior Academic Medicine Leader in SingHealth Duke-NUS AMC


July to August 2016
A Review Panel will review all applications, which will then be put through a matching process to identify the most suitable Academic Mentor based on the Academic Mentor Development Plan and the Academic Mentor Development Fellow’s needs.

September 2016
After successful matching, the list of Academic Mentor Development Fellow – Academic Mentor pairs will be tabled for award approval by Academic Council and updated to the Academic Medicine Executive Committee (AM EXCO).

October 2016
Successful Academic Mentor Development Fellows will be given a Letter of Award to notify them of their enrolment into the AM-ETHOS Academic Mentor Development Fellowship.
